ACTIVITIES OF SUBDIVISIONS OF PISCICULTURE

The Fisheries Service under the Ministry of Agriculture (hereinafter – the Fisheries Service) has the following subdivisions: Rusnė (Šilutė district), Žeimena (Švenčionys district, Ignalina district), Simnas (Alytus district), Laukysta (Kaišiadorys district) and Trakų Vokė (Vilnius).

Since 1998 Žeimena Subdivision of the Division of Pisciculture of the Fisheries Service breeds and farms the following salmonid fish only in closed recirculating systems (hereinafter – CRS): sea trout, salmon, rainbow trout, grayling.

Simnas Subdivision farms lavaret fish, catfish, European crayfish, and since recently also the Atlantic sturgeon in CRS, and carps, tench, zander, pike in ponds.

Rusnė Subdivision grows in CRS and introduces burbot, catfish, zander and currently the Atlantic sturgeon into the downstream part of the Nemunas river and the Curonian Sea.

The main activity of Laukysta Subdivision is targeted to the recovery and maintenance of fish stocks of Kaunas Reservoir: zander, pike are introduced and farmed till the fish reach 1 gram, and carps are farmed there. The Subdivision is significant because of the CRS system installed in the incubation department, which in 2013 was adapted to grow European eel.

Trakų Vokė Subdivision is the oldest pisciculture entity in Lithuania built in 1884–1885. Currently the Subdivision having cold water ponds perfect for salmonid fish farming specialises in farming breeders of conserved and protected cold water fish (salmon, rainbow trout, grayling, peled).

The Fisheries Service breeds and grows fish not only for introducing fish into and State-owned water bodies and the ones that are not leased, but also sells fish to individuals wishing to introduce fish into their ponds, private or leased water bodies.

Specialists of the Division consult clients on buying juvenile fish, introducing fish and crayfish into water bodies, expaning feed base of water bodies and other aquaculture and pisciculture topics.
